The lid is only for use when the chimenea is not in use and cool. We recommend having smaller fires to begin with to season the chimenea and never have a fire big enough for flames to be seen through the top funnel. 
We suggest covering your chimenea when not in use to prolong the life of the chimenea and where possible bring indoors.
